Welcome to the Australia District Website.

Kiwanis International is a global organisation of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. In an atmosphere of fun and friendship, Kiwanians aim to make a difference.

Australia became the twenty-second country in the world to embrace Kiwanis and on 2nd October 1967, the Kiwanis Club of Melbourne was formed.

Membership in a Kiwanis club will give you the chance to meet people from all walks of life, including local business people and community leaders. It will also give you the opportunity to contribute to improving your community.

Please explore our website. You will find many items of interest. If you are interested in learning more about the rewards of membership, use any of the contact opportunities you will find on the pages that follow. Enjoy your tour and thank you for visiting.

Message from the District Governor

JOHN BROMILOW

Greetings to all and we hope that you had an enjoyable festive season

Now that the holiday season is behind us we all need to focus on the challenges ahead. The biggest challenge is increasing membership. Every member needs to take personal responsibility and attempt to introduce at least one new member each year. If you are reading this and think “I’ve asked every one that I know to join Kiwanis” then, at your next Club meeting get members to spend 10 minutes brainstorming who should I invite to be a member of my Club. At the Warrnambool convention I challenged the participants to become “Distinguished Kiwanians” this year. Not one person in the room indicated that they would not take up the challenge.

In order to become a distinguished Kiwanian a member is required to:

  • Introduct two (2) new members for the Kiwanis year
  • Participate in at least 4 Club projects
  • Contribute (through their Club) to Kiwanis District and International Foundations
  • Attend a District or International Convention
There were 140 people in the room at Convention, howeverour net membership is currently 12. It would be a joyous occasion to be able to report at the end of this Kiwanis year that we had over 50 distinguished Kiwanians for the 2011-12 year.

Media promotion is an issue that has been raised in several forums throughout Kiwanis. Why do other service Clubs advertise for membership on television or in the papers? Why not Kiwanis? This question was asked at the recent International Board of Trustees meeting in New Orleans. The answer was one of tradition. It was something like:

Traditionally new members have been invited to join Kiwanis. This practice has operated for (nearly) 100 years and has been successful. We recruit more members per year than Lions or Rotary but are unable to maintain them over a period of time. Our finances cannot match those of the other organisations and as such we are not in a position to use high cost media advertising.

This does not stop us seeking Advertising support or sponsorship but please keep in mind “who’s paying the final bill”. Social media forums such as You-tube or facebook offer an opportunity to advertise at low costs. If anyone has the ability to create a social media ad please come forward.

Lastly I would like to remind members of several upcoming events. ASPAC convention is in Sri Lanka in March. The International Convention is late June.

One other event is April 22nd where we celebrate Kiwanis One Day. This day is dedicated to all members of the Kiwanis family working together on projects. Please read the literature that will be forwarded over the next month and as a Club develop a project that brings together everyone within the Kiwanis family.

Let’s work as one to raise the Kiwanis name in Australia.

What if you could save a baby's life?

With The Eliminate Project, you can. Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) kills one baby every nine minutes. But three doses of a 60-cent vaccine can protect mothers and babies. Kiwanis and UNICEF have joined forces to bring this vaccine to 38 countries, eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. What can you do right now? Learn about MNT and advocate for the cause. Participate in our fundraisers. Over the next few years, the work we do will change the world. Find out more at www.TheEliminateProject.org.
